Shirley Ola Shelton, 87, of Wayne City, Illinois, formally of Sandwich, Illinois passed away April 16, 2024 at Stonebridge Memory Care Center in Mount Vernon, Illinois. She was born June 10, 1936 in Jefferson County to Docia and Clyne Rapp.
Shirley worked at Jovac in North Aurora for many years. In 1999, Shirley moved back to Wayne City with her husband, Fred. Shirley was always a natural caregiver, and spent most of her life looking after her extended family in so many ways. She enjoyed quilting and cooking, especially for her family. Shirley was a classy but feisty lady who loved fiercely with all her heart. Her greatest joy in life was being a grandmother and spending time with her great-grandchildren.
Shirley leaves behind two sons, Roger (Valerie) Patterson and Gary Patterson; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Patterson; three sisters, Melba Kissner, Joan (Bill) Braddy Shelby (Ron) LeDuc; many grandchildren, including, Jason (Erin) Patterson, Christina (Hector) Garibay, Ashley Patterson, Kyle Patterson, Rebecca Rocco, and Jessica (Brandon) Baird; many great-grandchildren, including Shelbi, Sienna, and Samuel Patterson, Jeremiah and Jaxson Garibay, Alexandria Rocco, Alexis Johnson, Holly (Bill) Whitlock, Alison and Philip Baird, and great-great-grandchildren, Karsyn and Lennox Whitlock. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Docia and Clyne Rapp; step mother, Hattie Rapp; husband and love of her life, Fred A. Shelton; sister, Eleanor R. Purdy; brother, Jim Rapp; brother-in-law, Roy Kissner; eldest son, James Steven Patterson; two grandsons, Jeremiah Joshua Patterson and Richard D. Johnson.
Shirley will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Stonebridge Memory Care in Mount Vernon for their generous support and care of Shirley the last four years.
A Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 24, 2024 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Archie Sanders Memorial Chapel in Wayne City, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 am with Reverend Jay Loucks officiating. Interment will follow at Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City, Illinois. Memorials may be made in Shirley’s honor to the charity of the donor’s choice.
