It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dale Eugene Hillyer, age 68, on June 10, 2024. He passed away peacefully in the home that he built himself in rural Xenia, Illinois.

Dale was truly a kind-hearted man who touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, compassion, and generosity that will forever be remembered.

Dale was well-known for his gentle spirit, caring nature, and happy disposition. He was always there to lend a helping hand at a moment’s notice. His selflessness knew no bounds and he went about his life spreading kindness and joy to all whom he encountered. Whether an old friend or a new acquaintance, Dale could strike up a conversation and talk about many different topics. He was a highly intelligent guy who was knowledgeable about many things, being a true student of life. After conversing with him at the doctor’s office, the grocery store, or a local restaurant, he would consider you his new friend and would remember you the next time you met.

Dale was born on January 24, 1956, in Sullivan, Indiana, to Eugene Joseph and Hazel Maxine (Strange) Hillyer. He was a very loving and devoted son, visiting his mother daily when she was in a nursing home. He is survived by a sister, Mary Ann Hillyer of Centralia. Although Dale did not have a family of his own, he was encircled with love by the big family of his

best friend since high school, Jeff Moore, and was truly a “brother, brother-in-law, and Uncle Dale” to them all.

Dale was known as a true patriot and loved his country. He was ready to boldly support and defend her if needed. He had a strong work ethic and was known to be highly conscientious and honest. Dale’s work history included Halliburton in Flora for 3+ years, a truss factory in Effingham, and he worked part-time then full-time as a rural postal carrier in Xenia until retirement. Dale was a short-wave radio enthusiast and had a ham radio license. He was also known to take his bonus nieces and nephews for camping trips or out to eat at one of his favorite restaurants, the China Buffet. In fact, the owners there became as close as family members, as he often shred American culture and language with them.

As we mourn the loss of Dale, we take solace in the memories of his kindness, his infectious laughter, and unwavering caring. Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched and shared life with. Rest in peace, dear friend Dale E. Hillyer.

Per Dale’s wishes, there will be no formal services. Interment will take place in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Xenia, at a later date. Arrangements are by Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Memorial donations may be made to Tunnels to Towers, or to any charity of the donor’s choice, and these

will be accepted through the funeral home. To share a condolence or memory, visit: www.frankandbright.com
