The 2024 Spring All-South Baseball Team was announced yesterday with 52 players named to the team. The following players from the area being selected include:

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:

The St. Louis Cardinals suffered a walk-off loss for the second game in a row. The Cardinals lost 4-3 against the Miami Marlins at Loan Depot Park yesterday. St. Louis tied the game at three when Masyn Winn scored on an error, but Otto Lopez hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Marlins the win. Nolan Gorman went deep in the losing effort, while Ryan Fernandez was tagged with the loss out of the pen. The Cardinals remain in second place in the NL Central at 36-and-37. Andre Pallante starts for St. Louis against San Francisco tonight in St. Louis. Game time is 6:15pm.

The Cubs held off the Giants 6-5 to win their series from Wrigley Field. Dansby Swanson slugged a solo homer and finished with three RBI, while Ian Happ also went deep. Kyle Hendricks earned the win after giving up one run on two hits while striking out eight batters over five-and-two-thirds innings. Colton Brewer notched his first save of the season as Chicago has won back-to-back games and sits fourth in the NL Central at 36-and-39. The Northsiders host the Mets Friday afternoon at 1:20. In other team news, the Cubs designated catcher Yan Gomes for assignment yesterday.

The Chicago White Sox couldn’t solve Hunter Brown during a 4-1 loss to the Houston Astros at Guaranteed Rate Field. The Sox struck out six times against the Houston starter and were held to just one run on seven hits in six innings. Andrew Benintendi homered to give the Sox their only run, and Garrett Crochet fell to 6-and-6 after surrendering three runs on nine hits in six innings. Chicago has dropped two of three and remains in last place in the AL Central at 20-and-55. Chris Flexen starts for Chicago against Houston today. First pitch is at 1:10.
