MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:

Sonny Gray shined on the mound to help the Cardinals complete a three-game sweep of the Giants. St. Louis downed San Francisco 5-3 in the series finale at Busch Stadium. Gray earned the win and moved to 9-and-4 after striking out eight batters and allowing one run through seven innings. Alec Burleson led the way at the plate, going two-for-four with two RBI and a run scored. Ryan Helsley recorded his MLB-leading 26th save, and the Cardinals now sit second in the NL Central at 39-and-37. Lance Lynn starts for St. Louis against Atlanta tonight. First pitch is at 6:45 in St. Louis.

The Chicago Cubs surrendered three home runs during a 5-2 loss to the New York Mets at Wrigley Field. New York scored three runs in the top of the third, and the Cubs trailed the rest of the way. Christopher Morel homered in the losing effort, and Javier Assad was charged with his third loss after surrendering four runs on seven hits in four-and-a-third innings. The Northsiders are in fourth place in the NL Central at 37-and-41. Justin Steele starts for the Cubs against San Francisco tonight in San Francisco. Game time is at 8:45.

The Chicago White Sox continued their pathetic season with an 11-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park yesterday. The Southsiders gave up five runs in the first and four in the second to dig themselves into an early hole. Nicky Lopez had two hits and two RBI in the losing effort, while Jonathan Cannon allowed five earned runs and three unearned runs on seven hits in an inning-plus. Chicago is in fifth place in the AL Central at 21-and-58. Garrett Crochet starts for the Sox against the Dodgers tonight in Chicago at 7:10.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL NEWS:

Illinois Basketball Lands Five-Star Recruit

One of the top basketball recruits in the country is coming to Champaign. Five-star wing Will Riley announced yesterday that he is committing to the Illinois Fighting Illini. Riley is the highest ranked prospect that Illinois had landed in its history, and he chose the Illini over the likes of Kentucky, Arizona, and Arkansas, among others. He was originally a member of the 2025 recruiting class, but he is reclassifying and will join the Illinois roster for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
