JR FOOTBALL LEAGUE SIGN UP:

If you have a 4th through 8th grade student in your household and you live in Mt Vernon or Jefferson County, this Saturday is Sign-Up Day for the Jr Football League from 10am to 12 noon at the High School in the Turf Room. Registration fee is $100. Park in the gym lot and enter through the gym lobby doors. Practices will start the week of July 8th.

 

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:

Miles Mikolas had one of the worst starts of his career as the St. Louis Cardinals lost to the Cincinnati Reds 11-4 at Busch Stadium. Mikolas was charged with his seventh loss after surrendering nine earned runs and one unearned run on 12 hits in four-and-a-third innings. Nolan Arenado homered in the losing effort as the Cards dropped to 41-and-39. St. Louis is in second place in the NL Central. Andre Pallante takes the mound for the Cardinals against Cincinnati tonight in St. Louis at 7:15.

Ian Happ hit a two-run homer in top of the 10th inning to help the Cubs avoid a four-game sweep against the Giants. Chicago defeated San Francisco 5-3 in a 10-inning contest at Oracle Park. Chicago is fourth in the NL Central at 38-and-44. Jameson Taillon starts for the Cubs against Milwaukee tonight at Milwaukee at 7:10.

The Chicago White Sox surrendered just three hits during a 1-0 win over the Atlanta Braves at Guaranteed Rate Field. The Sox snapped a four-game losing streak, but they remain in last place in the NL Central at 22-and-61. Drew Thorpe starts for the White Sox against the Rockies tonight in Chicago at 6:10.

NHL NEWS:

The St. Louis Blues are adding a Stanley Cup champion to their coaching staff. Claude Julien was hired by the team as an assistant coach yesterday. Julien coached for three teams between 2002 and 2021, leading the Bruins to a Stanley Cup win in 2011. In other team news, the Blues have the 16th overall pick in the NHL Draft tonight.

Chicago Blackhawks center Connor Bedard is this year’s winner of the Calder Trophy. The Calder award is given to the rookie of the year in the NHL. Bedard was first among rookies in 2023-24 in goals with 22 and points with 61. He was tied at the top among rookies with 39 points. In other team news, the Blackhawks select at picks two and 18 during the first round of the NHL Draft tonight.
