Illinois residents will notice a slight increase in gasoline prices at the pump.

Effective today, the state’s motor fuel tax will rise from 45.4 cents per gallon to 47 cents per gallon, representing a 3.5 percent increase. Additionally, the tax on diesel fuel will also see an uptick from 52.9 cents to 54.5 cents per gallon.

According to Forbes magazine, Illinois has witnessed a significant 147 percent increase in fuel tax over the past seven years. With this latest adjustment, Illinois now holds the second-highest state gas tax rate, only trailing behind California. The new rate of 47 cents per gallon brings Illinois within four cents of California’s rate of 51 cents per gallon.

This increase is part of Governor JB Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois Capital Plan, which aims to allocate nearly $45 billion towards infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, railroad crossings, and port enhancements.
