A man from Mt. Vernon died Saturday at a hospital in the St. Louis area while recovering from injuries sustained in a crash late Thursday night.

21-year-old William Penrod III was driving alone when he reportedly veered off the roadway near Straw Road and ended up in a ditch on the southbound side of Route 148. Upon arrival at the scene, Fire Department officials found Penrod trapped in his vehicle and had to open a back door to rescue him.

After the rescue operation, Penrod was taken to SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon and later airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital, where he eventually died of his injuries.
