Mildred E. “Millie” Gwaltney, 95, of rural Carmi, Illinois, died Monday, June 19, 2023, at her home. She was born May 17, 1928, in Enfield, Illinois, the daughter of John Patrick Russell and Katie (Todd) Russell. She was married to Charles L. “Jumbo” Gwaltney and he preceded her in death on August 1, 2022.
Millie was co-owner and operator for 60 years with her husband. She was an accomplished seamstress and did clothing alterations as part of the services offered at their business. She was a member of the Enfield General Baptist Church in Enfield, Illinois.
Survivors include daughter Diane Strong of Carmi, Illinois; son David A. (Starla) Gwaltney of Eddyville, Kentucky; ex daughter in law Yvonne Black; sisters Betty Martin of Hollywood, Florida, Etta Lumb of Enfield, Illinois; grandchildren Brian Keith (Emily) Gwaltney, Luke (Beth) Titzer, Sarah Nicole Strong; great grandchildren Jewel Gwaltney, Jonathan Gwaltney, Dion Gwaltney, Rylie Titzer, Dylan Titzer; and great great granddaughter A’Riah Gwaltney.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; son Brian Keith Gwaltney; granddaughter Jennifer Gwaltney; sisters Christina Newman, Ellen Barton, Ruby Barger, Dorothy Jumper; and brother Lester Barton.
Visitation and funeral are Friday, June 23, 2023, at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi, Illinois. Visitation is at 10 am and funeral is at 12 noon. Burial is in Little Zion Cemetery in Mill Shoals Township, White County, Illinois.
