The Illinois Commerce Commission has approved the implementation of a new 730 area code in southern Illinois to help with the high demand of new telephone numbers in southern Illinois and the current 618 area code. The new 730 area code will overlay the existing 618 area code, which serves all or parts of 37 counties, including Wayne County.
Starting this Friday, July 7th, customers in the 618 area code overlay region may be assigned a new number in the new 730 area code when they request new service or an additional line. The 730 area code will co-exist everywhere in the region. Customers receiving the 730 area code will be required to dial 10 digits, the area code and telephone number, for all local calls, as is the case currently for customers with the 618 area code.
Telephone customers should know a few key facts about the 618/730 area code overlay. They include the fact that telephone numbers, including current area code, will not change. The price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services will not change due to the overlay, and what is now a local call will remain a local call.
