West Salem Village Board Recap for January

The Village of West Salem’s Board met on Monday, January 22, 2024 at 6:30pm.

At the meeting,

o The Mayor shared that Assistant Water Superintendent Mike Clark has started his water licenses classes.

o In response to complaints from residents, the Board discussed a revised Garbage Ordinance. The proposed Ordinance states that trash receptacles should not be left at the curb for more than 48 hours. Residents should store their trash receptacles adjacent to their residents or other structures on the premises. No action was taken. The Ordinance will be voted upon at the next scheduled meeting, February 26, 2024.

o The Board discussed a revised Nuisances (Weeds) Ordinance. The proposed Ordinance provides more clarity on defining ‘overgrowth.’ No action was taken.

o The Village Attorney reported that the owner of two abandoned and dilapidated properties in West Salem has been served legal notice.

The village board took action on several items.

o Approval of a Change Order for the Sewer Lagoon project. A replacement valve, costing $10,669.00, will be covered by the grant that was awarded for this project.

o Approval of a raise for Treasurer Kelli Higgins following a positive annual performance review. It was noted that Ms. Higgins has successfully handled many challenges this year.

o Approval to seek Janitorial Services for Village Hall. The Board directed Treasurer Higgins to look into finding a janitorial service for Village Hall. This is a budgeted expense.
