During the Boys Class 1A State Track & Field Championships Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, three area athletes made the podium to place in the Top-8. Trent Bliss of Fairfield finished 8th in the High Jump by clearing the bar at 6’ 2”. Mitchel Edwards of Carmi won the 1A State High Jump event with a leap of 6’ 6.75” while Ben Roedl of Altamont placed third with a jump of 6’ 5.5”. Mitchel Edwards is just the 3rd Carmi Bulldog to ever win an individual State Championship in Track & Field.

The Mt Carmel Aces came from behind Saturday to edge Nashville 3-2 to win the Championship of the Class 2A Boys High School Baseball Sectional. The winning run was scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie. The Aces will now face Effingham St Anthony on Monday in the 2A Super-Sectional game, which will be played at SIU-Carbondale. That game will begin at 2:00pm.

The Carterville Lady Lions are now 35-1 after shutting out Johnston City 9-0 Saturday to win the Class 2A Girls High School Softball Sectional Championship. The Lions will now advance to play in the Super-Sectional against Newton on Monday.

In the Class 2A Softball Super Sectionals today at Johnston City at 10am Windsor/Stew-Stras will play Trico. Tuesday is the 3a softball Sectional semifinals. At Waterloo, Freeburg takes on Effingham followed by Marion and Waterloo.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:

After a 2 1/2 hour rain delay in St. Louis, the Cardinals went on to beat the Chicago Cubs last night 4-3. Paul Goldschmidt homered twice and Sonny Gray tossed five scoreless innings. St. Louis has won five in a row for the first time since winning six straight from July 15-20, 2023 and has won 10 of its last 12 games. St. Louis is in Cincinnati for a three game series beginning at 3:10 (Monday) afternoon while the Cubs are in Milwaukee to play a four game series with first pitch today at 3:10 pm.
