Charles “Charlie” Alvin Newman, 85,of Carmi

Charles “Charlie” Alvin Newman, 85, passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at home in Carmi, Illinois. He was born on April 17, 1939, in Carmi, the son of Frank and Isabell (Nelson) Newman. Charlie married Minnie (Gish) Newman, on January 12, 1969, and spent 55 wonderful years together. Charlie spent his life providing for his family. First, working in the oil fields and later working for the city of Carmi in the Street and Alley department, from where he retired in 1995. He also commercially fished the Little Wabash River for catfish. Charlie was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed making fishing nets, gardening, hunting and fishing. No matter if Charlie was at work or enjoying his hobbies, he was never without a good dip of Coppenhagen. He truly was a family man and was always surrounded by his children and grandchildren who he loved.

In addition to his wife, Minnie Newman, Charlie is survived by his children, Bill (Mariah) Newman of Carmi, Rita Newman of Carmi, Rada Turner of Carmi, Charlie Bob Newman of Crossville, Mary (David) Selph of Crossville, and Becky (Brad) Meyer of Crossville; siblings, Gertrude “Lou” Hart, Barbara Fletcher, Frank Newman, and Terri Buchanan; grandchildren, Braxton, Michael, Megan, Amber, Jessica, Amanda, Jacob, Dylan, Katelyn, Brittany, Hunter, Rana, Josh, Charley, Kristi, Chasity, and Michelle; many great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Ann, Ron, Don, Bob, Tom, Charlotte, and Carrol, and grandchildren, Michael Scott, Matthew, and Cindy.

Funeral services for Charles “Charlie” Alvin Newman will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October, 31, 2024, at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, with burial at North Maple Ridge. Friends and family may visit from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Charlie’s memory to Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, who are in charge of arrangements, to assist the family with the funeral expenses.
