Mendenhall Trial Delayed Until January, 2025

Convicted serial killer Bruce D. Mendenhall of Albion has been sitting in an Indianapolis jail cell since the summer of 2021 awaiting trial for the murder of Carma Purpura, 32 of Indianapolis.  His trial was set to begin this Tuesday, but at the last minute, Marion County, Indiana prosecutors were granted a continuance until January 21, 2025.

 

Mendenhall, a former over the road truck driver is accused of shooting Purpura in the back of the head. Her body was dumped behind a fast food restaurant near an Indianapolis truck stop.  Now 73 years old, Mendenhall is already serving life sentences for the murder of Samantha D. Winters of Lebanon, Tennessee and Sara Nichole Hulbert of Nashville, Tennessee. He drew an additional 30-year sentence for trying to hire a fellow Nashville inmate to rub out Pat Postiglione, the Nashville homicide detective that arrested him in Nashville.

 

After the Marion County, Indiana trial, Mendenhall is slated to go on trial in Birmingham, Alabama for the slaying of Lucille “Gretna” Carter. She was shot in the head with a .22 caliber rifle. Her body… with a trash bag over her head , was found dumped next to a trash bin along a service road in Birmingham.  He remains a suspect in at least two other homicides.
