Officials have announced the Cave-In-Rock ferry will resume its weekend operations on a reduced schedule while addressing staffing shortages.
Crittenden County Judge-Executive Perry A. Newcom made the announcement yesterday (Tuesday) as The Ohio River Ferry Authority and ferry operators have enacted a temporary schedule.
The Cave-in-Rock ferry allows for transportation between Cave-in-Rock, Illinois and Crittenden County, Kentucky and carries about 500 vehicles across the Ohio River. When the ferry is forced to close it turns a normal 10-mile trip between Cave-in-Rock and Marion, KY, into a 70-minute detour.
This temporary schedule will allow the ferry to resume operations seven days a week beginning this weekend, November 2nd.
Going forward, Saturday and Sunday hours will be from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. While on weekdays, the ferry will continue to run from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The Ferry is operated by an independent contractor with joint funding from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the Illinois Department of Transportation through a ferry authority.
