The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced the launch of a lane expansion and bridge replacement project on both northbound and southbound Interstate 57, stretching from Atchison Creek near mile marker 85 to mile marker 92, just south of Mt. Vernon. As part of this construction, the ramp from westbound Interstate 64 to southbound I-57 will be closed until April 2026.
Motorists can expect various nightly lane closures and shifts during the project. A detour will be clearly marked to help drivers navigate around the closure safely.
This comprehensive $51.9 million project will add an extra lane in each direction, install storm sewers and drainage systems, build a median barrier, resurface the road, replace the existing bridge, and apply a deck overlay. The project is anticipated to be completed by summer 2027.
Drivers are encouraged to stay attentive to changing conditions, follow detour signs, adhere to posted speed limits, avoid using mobile devices, and remain alert for construction workers and equipment in the area.
