U.S. FOREST SERVICE CLOSES SNAKE ROAD UNTIL NOVEMBER 15TH

By Mark Wells Nov 1, 2024 | 11:56 AM

Due to unseasonably warm weather, the U.S. Forest Service has extended the closure of Snake Road in the Shawnee National Forest until November 15th to protect reptiles and amphibians during their fall migration.

Snake Road is typically closed from September 1st through October 30th to allow safe passage for various species migrating from their summer habitat in the LaRue Swamp to their winter habitat in the limestone bluffs.

While the road is closed to vehicles, pedestrians are welcome.

Visitors must adhere to special site regulations for the LaRue Pine Hills/Otter Pond Research Natural Area year-round.
