Drought conditions are increasing in Illinois and the Midwest, although southern Illinois did receive some beneficial rainfall on Thursday.
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor Map from Thursday, prior to the rainfall, now shows all of southern Illinois in at least Abnormally Dry conditions. Wayne County and the southern part of the state is Abnormally Dry. Central Illinois is in a Moderate Drought, while northeastern Illinois and the northwest tip of the state is in Severe Drought conditions. There are rain chances for the area beginning Sunday and running through midweek, with more chances toward this Friday. Extended outlooks also favor above normal precipitation and temperatures.
The area river stages as of this morning are as follows: the Little Wabash River east of Fairfield is at 4.04 feet. Flood stage is 17 feet. At Clay City the stage is 3.75 feet. Flood stage is 18 feet. At Carmi the river is at 3.12 feet. Flood stage is 27 feet. The Skillet Fork at Wayne City is at 4.97 feet. Flood stage is 15 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel is at 2.4 feet, below the 19-foot flood stage. Bonpas Creek at Browns is at 1.2 feet.
