The Fairfield Veterans Day Service is set for Monday, November 11th and the featured speaker at this years service at Maple Hill Cemetery in Fairfield will be Marine veteran, Gary Locke.
Gary Locke was born and raised in the Pond Creek area east of town. His parents were Elvyn and Myrtle Locke. Gary graduated from FCHS in 1964. He joined the Marine Corps in 1965, was sent to Vietnam in February, 1966, then rotated back stateside in 1967. Gary was stationed at Concord Naval Weapons Station in Concord, California until being sent back to Vietnam in 1969 and was discharged in August 1969. He joined the Illinois State Police in 1970 and retired in 1997 and then moved to the Memphis area and went to work for FedEx as a Security manager at the Memphis Hub. Gary and his wife, the former Verna Minter, live in Mississippi.
The November 11th service starts at 11 a.m. and Dave Land will serve as MC. The invocation and benediction will be given by Lawrence Hurley and the national anthem will be sung by Elizabeth Reever. Commander Dick Price of the VFW and Commander Tom Seaman of the American Legion will present a wreath in honor to the unknown service person, followed by a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps by Doug Aman.
In case of inclement weather the program will be held at the CP Church on outer West Delaware.
