The 2024 General Election is now history. In Wayne County, there were no races of interest and those running unopposed were all elected to office including Circuit Clerk, Georgiana Fletcher; Coroner, Carrie Jo Dagg and Wayne County State’s Attorney, Kevin Kakac. The Wayne County Board elected 6 to serve on the board. Wayne County Clerk, Liz Ann Woodrow says there was 75 percent voter turnout in this year’s general election. In Edwards County, Clerk Mary Beth Smith says 77.76 percent of voters went to the polls Tuesday. Mark Curtis won another term as Edwards County Coroner with 2,682 votes. His challenger, Amanda Thompson received 507 votes. Mark Curtis has served as Edwards County Coroner for 44 years. Edwards County Circuit Clerk Amanda Willet, State’s Attorney Eric St. Ledger and County Commissioner Matthew St. Ledger all ran unopposed and was elected to office.
The Associated Press reports that US Representative for the 12th Congressional District Mike Bost (R) is the projected winner, retaining his seat and defeating Brian Roberts on Tuesday. The Illinois 12th Congressional District seat has been held by Bost since 2015. The 12th Congressional District covers the southernmost 30 counties in Illinois, including as far north as Coles County and down to Alexander County which is the southern tip of Illinois. Bost is the 15th representative to hold the seat. He was first elected in 2014, and then reelected in 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2022.
State Senator, Terri Bryant ran unopposed in the 58th District as did State Representative, Dave Severin in the 116th District and both will retain their office.
Nationally, former President Donald Trump has defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in a stunning victory, delivering him a second term in the White House after a historic election cycle filled with unprecedented twists and turns and two attempts on his life. Trump defeated Vice President Harris, who entered this race just over 100 days ago after President Biden, who won the Democratic primaries, was convinced to stand down. Trump was projected to have breached the 270 electoral vote threshold after stunning wins in the battleground states of North Carolina, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Georgia.
