Gregory L. Burgess, 70, of Golden Gate

70 year old Golden Gate resident, Gregory L. Burgess passed away peacefully Monday, November 4, 2024 surrounded by love in his cherished log cabin along the little Wabash River.

Greg’s profound love of history sparked his interest in pre 1840’s reenactments. An avid outdoormans, Greg was a cofounder of Buffalo Trace Muzzleloaders and founded The Wetzels Brigade. Both groups were charter members of the National Muzzle Loading and Rifle Association. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and AIM, American Indian Movement.

Greg started operating heavy equipment at age 17 and continued that as a career path until his retirement after 44 years with International Union of Operating Engineers Local 841 out of Terre Haute, Indiana,

Greg lived for many years almost completely off grid; this proved a testament to his love for the environment and self-sustainability. From childhood, Greg was an animal lover. You could always expect to meet his fur babies if you stopped by for a visit.

Greg leaves behind his two beloved daughters; Savannah Burgess and Tianna Barbee along with his four adored grandchildren; Sikoia Burgess, Corbin Barbee, Blaze Barbee and Tate Pitts. His two brothers; Tony (Marcia) Burgess and Brent Eskew along with numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his lady, Susie Foerster who brought joy, companionship, and love to his life. Greg’s warmth and deep appreciation for life will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.

Greg was preceded in death by his parents; Harold and Norma June (Bateman) Burgess as well as his little sister, Brenda Burgess.

Visitation and viewing will be held at his cabin in Golden Gate, Illinois at 1:00 p.m. of Saturday, November 9, 2024. Donations can be made to ensure the preservation of the land and cabin. Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so at time of service.
