NFL NEWS:
The Cowboys might be without their franchise quarterback for longer than was initially anticipated. NFL Network is reporting that Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott is dealing with a partial avulsion of his right hamstring, which means that part of the tendon has pulled away from the bone. Prescott has not been placed on injured reserve, but would miss at a minimum of four games if the Cowboys decide to go that route. Multiple sources have said that the three-time Pro Bowler will need a recovery period of more than four weeks. The 31-year-old was injured on a five-yard scramble during the team’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week Nine.
BASEBALL NEWS:
Willson Contreras is no longer the starting catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals announced yesterday that they intend to move Contreras from catcher to first base and designated hitter next season. Contreras broke his arm when he was hit with a bat on a swing last season, and the team hopes the move will allow him to extend his career. The 32-year-old hit .262 with 15 home runs and 36 RBI in just 84 games last year.
The top free agent in Major League Baseball is not expected to rush in making a decision. According to his agent, Scott Boras, superstar outfielder Juan Soto will take his time surveying the market before signing with a team. Boras indicated during Wednesday’s general manager’s meetings in San Antonio that Soto desires a “thorough” vetting before deciding his future. Soto spent the 2024 season with the New York Yankees, helping to lead the Bronx Bombers to Game Five of the World Series. The 26-year-old is likely to sign one of the largest deals in MLB history. Shohei Ohtani signed a 10-year, 700-million-dollar contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers last offseason.
One of the most coveted free agents in Major League Baseball is recovering from surgery. Third baseman Alex Bregman underwent surgery to remove a bone chip from his right elbow. The former Houston Astros star became a free agent last Thursday after the five-year, 100-million dollar deal he signed with the team in 2019 expired. Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, said that Bregman will be back swinging “in a few weeks” while also telling teams at the general managers meetings that the two-time All-Star is willing to move to second base.
The Rangers are not planning to push their manager out the door anytime soon. ESPN is reporting that Texas is giving Bruce Bochy the latitude to manage the team past the 2025 season. Bochy will turn 70 in April and just wrapped up his 27th season managing in the Majors. He currently ranks eighth all-time in managerial wins with 2,171, which is the most for any current manager across MLB. The Rangers hired former Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker as a senior advisor earlier this week and he is seen as a possible future manager for the franchise.
