The Wayne City Village Board met on Monday evening for their regular monthly meeting where the main topic of discussion was the Wayne City Police Department. Mayor Rocky Hedden emphasized the urgent need for a police officer, mentioning that he has received numerous complaints from residents regarding traffic violations since the resignation of former Chief Anson Fenton in September. In the meantime, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department has been providing coverage for the village as needed. Although a county resource officer is stationed at Wayne City School during the day, this officer is limited to 40 hours per week and prioritizes school needs. Several residents expressed their concerns to the village board about the lack of police presence and urged immediate action.
An ordinance intended to amend the position of Chief of Police and the structure of the department failed to receive any motions from the board.
This proposed amendment would have permitted the new police chief to reside within 30 miles of the village. Trustee Jarod Peyton expressed his preference to delay hiring a new officer, citing concerns about doing so close to the upcoming mayoral election. He also suggested that more detailed oversight for the new officer would be necessary. Trustee Stephen Buxton concurred, noting that the timing might not be ideal since the incoming mayor could appoint an officer.
In other matters, the board approved a motion for the purchase of an $8,000 ultrasonic device aimed at preventing potential algae growth in the village’s reservoir.
