Cathy Bevis, a beautiful lady known for her sweet personality and friendly smile, succumbed to congestive heart failure at 7:57PM Wednesday, November 13, 2024, surrounded by her family in Room 318 at Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana. She was 81.
Cathy Sue (Kinison) Bevis was born May 28, 1943, the fifth of five children born to Warren Hinkley and Vivian Lita (Hughey) Kinison in Mt Vernon Il. Cathy graduated from Webb School, a one room school in rural Jefferson County. As an eighth grader there, she won a county-wide essay contest and earned a trip to Springfield. She attended Woodlawn High School where she met her husband, Larry Bevis. Cathy and Larry were married December 5, 1958, at Woodlawn Baptist Church. They would have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in just a few days.
Cathy loved attending church at West Antioch General Baptist Church and going to Bible study at Ashland Christian Church. She enjoyed many sports, including pitching in both the church and city slow-pitch softball leagues in Fairfield. Cathy was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan win or lose. One summer the Cardinals won all twelve games she attended. She was their lucky charm!
Cathy was a faithful wife, devoted mother, and hard-working homemaker. Above all, she loved her family who, in turn, adored her. She is survived by her husband, Larry; daughters Debbie Bevis, Cindy (Don) Grimes, Kelley (Jeff) Stanley, and Peggy (Scott) Johns; grandchildren Don Grimes III and Devon (Seth) Field; Kyle (Kyle) Reel, Kenzey (Aaron) Tucker, and Jay (Kayla) Stanley; Warren Bevis, Meg (Aaron) Harris, Melany (Tyler) Williams, and Tyler and Alex Johns; and great grandchildren Charlie Field; Vega Stanley and Judah, Ezra, and Isaiah Reel; Korey and Scottie Tucker; Micah, Arlo, Renny, and Della Stanley; Liam and Riley Hackney and Braxton Beshears; Paisleigh Deadmond and Braelynn, Piper, Ivy, and Gauge Williams; and two more due next year. Cathy also leaves behind cherished in-laws Diane Wilson, Helen (Wayne) Mooney, Mike (Kyle) Bevis, Patty (Thad) Heckman, Brad (Lynn) Bevis, and Brenda (Charlie) Wimberly; and Howard Harris, as well as scores of much loved nieces and nephews and treasured friends, many of whom referred to her as “Mamo,” her well-known family nickname.
Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Vivian Kinison; brothers, Larry Dee and Morris Kinison; sisters, Sharon (Art) Shewmake and Carla Rossio; and dearest grandson, Jon Stanley.
Visitation for Cathy Bevis will be held 11:00 – 1:00 Tuesday, November 19, at Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield, with the funeral immediately following. Family and friends are invited to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery where Cathy will be laid to rest. The funeral procession will pass by Bevis Valley, Cathy’s beloved home of 55 years.
Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home is in charge of all the arrangements.
