Wayne County Circuit Judge Michael J. Molt has announced his retirement, effective November 30th. Elected to the bench in 2014 and retained in 2020, Judge Molt has dedicated nearly a decade to serving the community.
A graduate of Fairfield Community High School in 1966, Judge Molt earned his accounting degree from the University of Illinois in 1971 and received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1974. He began his legal career as an attorney with the firm Marshall, Feiger, Robinson, and Quindry, later serving as a Special Assistant Attorney General for Illinois in the Sales Tax Collection Department and as a Trust Officer at the Wayne County Bank and Trust Company.
In 1997, Judge Molt established his own law firm, practicing as a sole practitioner. His commitment to the Fairfield community is evident through his involvement in various civic organizations, including the Jaycees and the Rotary Club. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the Fairfield Country Club and is an active member of the First Christian Church.
Throughout his tenure, Judge Molt presided over numerous complex legal cases in Wayne County and the Second Circuit until taking a medical leave in December 2023. Reflecting on his retirement, he remarked, “It has been an honor and privilege to serve as the Resident Circuit Judge of Wayne County. I had hoped to complete my term, which ends in 2026, but my current health situation prevents me from doing so. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Chief Judge Melissa Morgan and the judges who managed my docket during my leave, as well as to the voters of Wayne County for electing me to this role—it has truly been a remarkable opportunity.”
Second Circuit Chief Judge Melissa Morgan praised Judge Molt’s dedication, stating, “His commitment to upholding the law has garnered him the respect of all who have appeared before him. He has approached his role with responsibility and care, leaving a lasting impact on those who have worked alongside him. We wish him continued health and happiness in this new chapter of his life.”
