Alan Richard Phelps, age 42, a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2024. Born and raised in Southern Illinois, Alan touched countless lives with hid humor, intellect, and passion for music, learning, and life.
Alan was the cherished son of Stan (Susan) Phelps and Elaine Phelps (Bill Sharp). He was a devoted brother to Amber (Tony) Schweda, a proud uncle to Tony (Hannah) Schweda, Jr., Tristan Schweda, and Adriana Phelps Patton, and a caring stepbrother to Lesley (Tom), Carey (Kandi), and Matt (Claire). Alan held a special bond with many cousins, aunts, and uncles.
Alan attended Waltonville Grade and High Schools, continuing his education at Rend Lake Junior College. He earned a degree in Business and Finance from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and went on to achieve his Doctorate in Pharmacology from SIU Edwardsville. His dedication to his craft shone through in his work at General Tire in Mt. Vernon, Hy-Vee in Milan, and Kroger Pharmacy in Herrin, Illinois.
A talented swimmer in his youth, Alan was a proud member of the Mt. Vernon King City Flippers and Centralia Barracuda Swim Teams. His first love, however, was music. An accomplished guitarist, he found joy in the melodies he created and shared with those around him.
An avid reader and writer, Alan admired authors like Kurt Vannegut and Malcolm Gladwell, whose works inspired his sharp wit and insightful reflections. He was a thinker, a dreamer, and a source of comfort and wisdom to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Alan was preceded in death by his grandparents, Floyd and Imogene Phelps, and Irene and Emmett Baudendistel.
Alan will be dearly missed by all who loved him. His memory lives on in the hearts of his family and friends, as well as in the music, words, and laughter he left behind.
