John Howard Block Sr, 102, passed away at 7:51AM on Friday January 10, 2025, at Cisne Rehab. He was born in Cisne on December 10, 1922, to Benjamin and Mildred (Miller) Block. John was a farmer, steel worker, factory worker, and tractor mechanic. Between working at Valley Steel in Flora, he worked at Richy Brothers in Flora and Hagen’s Massey Ferguson in Clay City while still maintaining the family farm. During WWII, John did his part by working, during non- farm time, at Peoria Ammunition Plant for the Civilian Public Service. He loved to the play the guitar and mandolin, loved gospel music and gardening. John was a lifetime member of the Blue Point Free Will Baptist Church.
John is survived by daughters- Barbara (Tim) Woolever of Fairfield, Ruth Ann (Perry) Kunce of Cisne, and Gena (Marty Greenwood) Block of Xenia; son- Ben Block of Cisne; eight grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; nine great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
John was preceded in death by his parents, wife- Martha Block, son- John Block Jr, grandson- Daniel Kunce, brother- Wayne Block, and sisters- Esther Harrell and Mary Laughlin.
Funeral services will be held at 2PM on Thursday January 16, 2025, at Blue Point Free Will Baptist Church with burial in Cisne Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12PM until the time of service on Thursday at the church.
Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice and will be accepted at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home which is in charge of all the arrangements.
