Governor JB Pritzker, alongside Frichtl Processing and Slaughtering, LLC and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), announced a significant Economic Development for a Growing Economy (EDGE) for Startups agreement on Tuesday. This initiative marks a $2.5 million investment aimed at facilitating the expansion of Frichtl Processing.

The investment will allow Frichtl to acquire space in Dieterich’s new Industrial Park East and develop a new 9,227-square-foot meat processing and packaging facility. The project is set to enhance processing efficiency through the use of state-of-the-art equipment.

In addition to the processing facility, the new development will feature a retail store offering a diverse selection of essential products, including produce, baked goods, canned goods, dairy, and frozen foods. Frichtl will focus on processing beef, hogs, and deer, providing locally sourced meat products and convenient packaging options for retail customers. The initiative aims to improve food access for local residents, support local agriculture, and promote sustainable food practices, all while addressing the region’s nutritional needs and fostering economic growth by creating and retaining jobs.

As part of the state’s comprehensive incentive package, Frichtl Processing and Slaughtering, LLC has been awarded an EDGE for Startups tax credit and has pledged to invest $2.5 million, which will result in the creation of six new full-time positions.

“The State’s EDGE for Startups investment will help bolster economic growth throughout Southeastern Illinois,” stated DCEO Director Kristin Richards. “This expansion project will not only provide Frichtl with the necessary space and resources to enhance operations but will also support the local agricultural sector while addressing food insecurity in the region.”

The EDGE program was expanded to include startups in 2022, aimed at encouraging further investment in newer companies during their growth stages. This program allows companies to reduce payroll withholding instead of their Illinois corporate income tax liability, enabling startups without corporate tax obligations to maximize their reinvestment in expansion projects.

Frichtl Processing and Slaughtering is a majority woman-owned small business. Founded in 2023 by Rachel and Zach Frichtl, a husband-and-wife team with over 15 years of experience in the industry, the company has established strong ties with local farmers to ensure high-quality sourcing. Their mission is to fill the market gap for meat products in southern Illinois and the surrounding areas.
