Two individuals are dead following a serious traffic accident Thursday morning on I-57 Southbound near Ina. Emergency responders, including police and fire crews, were dispatched to the scene around 10 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered an SUV that had sustained extensive damage and was on fire near the engine. The vehicle was wedged between two semis, showing severe front and rear damage.
In total, three semis were involved in the collision. Illinois State Police officers rescued a female passenger in critical condition from the SUV and began administering aid until firefighters and ambulance persdonnel arrived. Unfortunately, the male driver died of his injuries at the scene.
Air Evac arrived shortly after and transported the female passenger to a trauma center in St. Louis, where she later died from her injuries. As of now, the identities of the victims have not been released by Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse. The cause of the accident remains unknown, and the Illinois State Police, along with Accident Reconstructionists, are conducting an investigation.
