The Fairfield City Council met last (Tuesday) night with a very light agenda. The council approved the minutes from the January 28th meeting along with the executive session minutes from the November 12th, 2024 meeting and also the payment of bills.
Mayor Gary Moore says effective March 1st, Republic Services will be the city’s contractor for residential trash collection. Mayor Moore says he has had meetings with officials from Republic and Sunrise Sanitation with Sunrise servicing trash totes for the last time the week of February 24th and will also be retrieving all of their containers. Moore says if your Sunrise container is not picked up at the time it is emptied, leave the container curbside as Sunrise will be around to pick up all containers. If a residence has more than one Sunrise container, be sure all Sunrise containers are curbside for their pickup that week. The last week of February, Republic Services will be distributing containers for service to begin March 1st. Their routes will begin at approximately 5am, so to avoid being missed and tote not getting serviced, totes need to be curbside the evening before your scheduled pickup day. The daily trash route is:
Monday-Ward #1: East of North 1st St. and South 1st St.
Tuesday-Ward #2: North of Elm St., West of North 1st St. and East of NW 7th St.
Wednesday-Ward #4: West of NW 7th St. and SW 7th St.
Thursday-Ward #3: North of railroad tracks to Elm St.
Friday-Ward#3: South of railroad tracks
Republic Services offers the option of a 2nd container at the rate of $6 per month. Any resident that would like a 2nd container, contact Dian at Fairfield City Hall at 618-842-2294 to be placed on the list for the 2nd container. Residents will then be contacted by Republic to set up payment options for the second tote.
Republic Services will also do a monthly BULK pickup by City Ward on each Wednesday of the month with the following schedule:
1st Wednesday each month: Ward #1
2nd Wednesday each month: Ward #2
3rd Wednesday each month: all of Ward #3
4th Wednesday each month: Ward #4
Mayor Moore says residents will see an increase in their trash service with Republic going from $21.80 to $31.80 per month and information regarding Republic Services schedule, accepted and non-accepted items can be picked up at City Hall, viewed on the City’s Facebook page and will even be listed in the Wayne County Press beginning Monday, February 17th. Mayor Moore says the city appreciates the cooperation and patience during this transition and if any resident has questions or concerns to call Fairfield City Hall at 618-842-2294.
Mayor Moore addressed the council concerning the latest delay with the hotel project on the west side of Fairfield. Moore says everything was moving along with the developer until he learned the details on the property tax provided by the County Assessment Officer, Jodi Poole. Poole provided what she calculated what the hotel tax anticipation would be was $256,000 a year, $21,000 a month, $711 a day. Mayor Moore says he has reached out to three other communities inquiring on their property tax assessments on hotels which were significantly lower than the proposed taxes for the Fairfield project. The council discussed potential tax abatement options that would allow the hotel developer to move forward on the project.
The council discussed selling the city-owned property at 303 Northeast 7th St., with $13,000 already invested in demolition and taxes. The council decided to set a minimum bid on the property at $5,000 with the option to accept or reject any bids with a due date of 4pm on the first day of the City Council meeting in April. Mayor Moore presented the financial report showing January revenues of $1, 416,333 and expenses of $1,524,369 resulting in a loss of $108,036. Year-to-date, the city has a loss of $360,780 with the cash flow for January showing a negative $53,035. The council went into executive session to discuss two items with no action taken.
