Fairfield Mules Boys Basketball will open Class 2 A Regional play on Monday, February 24th at The Mule Barn against Mt. Carmel. Tip-off is set for 7pm. The Mules defeated Edwards County on Friday night in Black Diamond Conference play. The Mules victory gave Head Coach Scott McElravy his 350th career coaching victory. The Mules have only one loss in BDC Conference play, and are now 16-12 overall and will host Flora tomorrow (Tuesday) night as it will be Senior Night with 3 levels of play starting at 5pm. Senior members of the basketball team along with Cheer and Band will be honored.

The Illinois Fighting Illini had a rough second half during a 79-65 loss to number-11 Michigan State at State Farm Center on Saturday. The Illini led by four at halftime, but they were outscored 42-24 in the second half. Illinois is in seventh place in the Big Ten with a 9-and-7 conference record and a 17-and-9 mark overall. The Illini visit number-15 Wisconsin tomorrow.

Nolan Arenado is still a member of the St. Louis Cardinals. The All-Star third baseman made it to Spring Training yesterday. The Cardinals announced after the 2024 season that they would try to trade Arenado during the offseason, but they couldn’t find a willing trade partner with an enticing offer. Arenado told reporters yesterday that he’s in the right place. He hit .272 with 16 home runs and 71 RBI last year.
The Chicago Cubs begin their second week of Spring Training today. The Northsiders had their first full-team workout last Friday. The Cubs play their Spring Training opener against the Dodgers this Thursday. Chicago’s first regular season game is a month from tomorrow.
A former White Sox All-Star has been diagnosed with stomach cancer. Bobby Jenks announced over the weekend that he is undergoing treatment for the disease. Jenks played with the Southsiders from 2005 until 2010, making the All-Star Game in 2006 and 2007. He was 14-and-18 with 173 saves and a 3.40 ERA in six seasons with the Sox.
