Local 4-H members showcased their skills at the first unit-wide 4-H Public Speaking Contest, hosted by Illinois Extension for Edwards, Lawrence, Richland, Wabash, and Wayne counties on February 17.
Samantha Gaither, the Illinois Extension 4-H youth development educator, emphasized the importance of communication, stating, “Communication is the key to being successful, and we are proud that eight youth from our five-county unit chose to improve that skill.” She expressed excitement about continuing the event in the future to encourage more youth participation.
Participants delivered a variety of speeches, including poetry recitations and formal presentations, competing at both beginner and advanced levels. The top five winners were:
First place: Levi Clodfelter, Richland County
Second place: Alex Paul, Wayne County
Third place: Seth Clodfelter, Richland County
Fourth place: Kelly Hinderliter, Edwards County
Fifth place: Titus Anderson, Lawrence County
All top performers are eligible to advance to the Illinois 4-H Public Speaking Contest on April 26 in Champaign as delegates for their respective counties. Additionally, Naomi Anderson was selected as a state fair delegate for Lawrence County.
