U.S. Representative Mike Bost has announced the application process for candidates interested in serving as the next US Attorney or US Marshal for the Southern District of Illinois. This district covers 38 counties, extending from the Metro East region to the Illinois-Indiana line and all areas south.
There are 94 federal districts across the country, each headed by a presidentially appointed US Attorney, who acts as the chief federal law enforcement officer and participates in civil litigation involving the United States.
The Southern District of Illinois has branch offices in Fairview Heights, Benton, and East St. Louis, and is currently served by Acting US Attorney Ali M. Summers.
US Marshals, also appointed by the president, oversee federal law enforcement, court security, criminal apprehension, and the custody of federal prisoners. The US Marshals Service for the Southern District of Illinois secures courts in East St. Louis, Alton, Benton, and Cairo, with US Marshal David C. Davis currently in charge.
While applications for both positions have already been submitted, qualified candidates are encouraged to send a resume, cover letter, and relevant casework or supporting materials to SouthernIllinoisSubmissions@mail.house.gov. Bost will conduct formal interviews in the next two weeks and will present recommendations to the White House for review. Following President Trump’s appointments, the nominees will undergo confirmation by the US Senate.
