The Pheasant Fest and Quail Classic was held Saturday in Kansas City, Missouri, where Flora resident Maverick Fisher was named National Volunteer of the Year.
Fisher is the chapter president for the County Line Quail Forever chapter and was chosen from six finalists. The award recognizes the very best the organization has to offer: the members and volunteers who embody the Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever mission, working to protect and grow wildlife habitat while ensuring the hunting heritage continues for generations to come.
Maverick teaches welding at Olney Central College and has served as chapter president of County Line Quail Forever since its inception in 2020. He noted that the habitat work the group undertakes resonated with the local community, leading to fescue conversions on small acreages and old horse pastures, expanding to farmers with CRP and municipalities. To date, they have impacted 1,240 acres in Clay and Wayne County. The chapter as a whole logged over 40 burn days last year, resulting in 400 acres of habitat impact.
