Sarah Frey from Wayne County was honored Tuesday by State Representative Dave Severin in Springfield. Frey, a Southern Illinois native and renowned agricultural figure, was honored as part of Women’s History Month. Frey, who operates Frey Farms in rural Wayne County, has made significant contributions to the agricultural industry as a pumpkin and watermelon farmer, entrepreneur, and community advocate.
In his tribute, Representative Severin highlighted Frey’s impressive achievements and her pioneering spirit in agriculture.
Sarah’s journey began at a young age, helping her family on their small farm. At just 16, she borrowed $10,000 to purchase a used truck to take over her family’s melon route, rapidly expanding their client base from 12 to 150.
When the farm faced financial difficulties, Sarah, at only 18, bought the farm outright and launched what would become a highly successful pumpkin farming operation. Today, she grows more pumpkins than any other farmer in the United States, earning her the title of ‘Pumpkin Queen of America.’
In addition to her pumpkin success, Sarah has developed a thriving watermelon juice brand called Tsamma Watermelon Juice.
Beyond her business accomplishments, Sarah is a passionate advocate for rural communities and women in agriculture. She serves on the United Fresh Government Regulations Council and the National Watermelon Promotion Board, and is an active member of the Illinois Agriculture Coalition Committee.
