RESIDENTS BEING WARNED OF IRS PHONE SCAM

By Mark Wells Mar 28, 2025 | 11:54 AM

Authorities in downstate regions are again warning residents about a prevalent scam, especially during tax season. Scammers impersonating IRS employees are making fraudulent calls to taxpayers, falsely claiming they owe money and must pay immediately to avoid fines or jail time. These calls are spoofed to look like they originate from Washington D.C., but they are not authentic.

Residents are reminded that the IRS never contacts taxpayers via email or phone; all official communications are sent through mail. This scam aims to steal money and personal information by employing fear tactics.
