The southern Illinois area has a pretty good chance for severe weather  later Sunday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky.

Their latest thinking is that a line of severe thunderstorms is expected to develop and move through the Wayne County region late Sunday and afternoon between 4 and 6 p.m.  The weather service says all modes of severe weather are possible, including large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes.  How much cloud cover is present Sunday morning along with rainfall could have an impact on the storms Sunday afternoon and evening.  The entire area is under an Enhanced Risk for severe weather as of today.

After Sunday’s weather, forecasters are keeping an eye on another system that could bring more severe weather to the region this coming Wednesday.  The Storm Prediction Center has the area under a Slight Risk for storms on Wednesday.  Heavy rainfall could also become an issue, with several chances for showers and thunderstorms towards midweek.

As far as area rivers, the only river currently above flood stage is the Little Wabash River east of Fairfield.  It is at 19.17 feet as of this morning, about two feet above flood stage.

Most of southern Illinois is out of any drought conditions.  Parts of west central and east central Illinois are under Moderate Drought and Severe Drought conditions.  Extended forecasts into the first week of April is indicating above normal temperatures and precipitation.
