MAJOR RIVER FLOODING CONTINUES AS STORM WATER FLOWS INTO LARGER RIVERS, SANDBAGGING OPERATIONS UNDERWAY IN THE SHAWNEETOWN & NEW HAVEN

The National Weather Service in Paducah says major river flooding continues across the region as water from last week’s storms is working its way from smaller creeks and streams into larger rivers and tributaries.

As of this (Tuesday) morning, the Ohio River at Paducah is forecast to crest at 49.5 feet on Wednesday, April 16th, its highest crest since Feb. 25th, 2019 when it crested at 53.27 feet.

The Ohio River at Cairo is forecast to crest at 54 feet Thursday, its highest crest since March 1st, 2019 when it crested at 56.51 feet.

The Ohio River at Shawneetown is forecast to crest at 53.5 feet on Monday, April 14th, its highest crest since March 4th, 2018 when it crested at 52.06 feet.

The Little Wabash River at Carmi is forecast to crest at 36.2 feet Friday,  its highest crest since May 8, 2017 when it crested at 36.01 feet.

Flood warnings remain in effect.

Sandbagging sites are currently open in the following locations: – Shawneetown – 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM – Old Shawneetown – 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM – New Haven – 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Volunteers are needed to assist with sandbagging operations.

Here’s the current river stages according to the US Geological Survey.  Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 29.76 feet  (flood stage is at 17 ft.) The Skillet Fork at Wayne City has a reading of 12.39 feet, (flood stage is 15 ft).  The Little Wabash below Clay City is at 22.70 feet.  (flood stage is at 18 ft.)  The Little Wabash at Main St. in Carmi is at 36.27 feet, (flood stage is at 27 ft.).  The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel is at 27.78 feet, (flood stage is at 19 ft.). The Bonpas Creek at Browns is at 21.76 feet.  Ohio River at Old Shawneetown IL-KY State line is 45.95 feet, (flood stage is at 33 ft.).
