HOMESCHOOL BILL CONTROVERSY IN ILLINOIS

By Mark Wells Apr 10, 2025 | 11:55 AM

The Illinois Freedom Caucus is criticizing far-left lawmakers for disregarding the wishes of thousands of Illinois families by advancing a measure that would require homeschoolers to register with their local public schools.

House Bill 2827 has already passed the Illinois House Education Policy Committee. Recently, the committee approved an amendment to the legislation, one that fails to address the fundamental concerns raised and was introduced with minimal public notice. Notably, Democrats have been substituting committee members at the last minute due to their apprehensions about the bill.

In response, the Illinois Freedom Caucus issued a statement asserting, “The purpose of this legislation is not to improve education. Instead, it seeks to punish those with whom the far left disagrees. The treatment of homeschool families by the Democrat majority has been unacceptable. The derogatory remarks made by the bill’s sponsor and her supporters are both cruel and unwarranted. Wednesday’s vote on the amendment further illustrates that Democrats do not trust parents and disregard parental rights. This legislation is fundamentally wrong, and we urge our colleagues to reject it when it comes to a vote on the House floor.”

The Illinois Freedom Caucus includes State Representatives Chris Miller (Chairman), Blaine Wilhour (Vice-Chairman), Adam Niemerg, Brad Halbrook, Jed Davis, David Friess, and State Senator Andrew Chesney. This group advocates for limited government, lower taxes, accountability, and integrity within the Illinois General Assembly.
