Rockey Ray Merritt, beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 10th, 2025, at the age of 79. He leaves behind a legacy of unwavering love, quiet strength, and a heart fiercely dedicated to his family.

Rockey was born on December 7, 1945, in Sims, IL, to Raymond Sr. and Eva (Thomason) Merritt, and was a man who lived with purpose and passion. He married the love of his life, Lorena Grace Hallam, with whom he built a life filled with laughter, support, and unconditional love. Together, they raised 4 children, instilling in them the values of hard work, integrity, and devotion to family.

Rockey had a deep love for cars and racing, from drag racing to NASCAR, and always looked forward to race days, cheering on his favorite drivers. He also enjoyed rooting for the St. Louis Cardinals and rarely missed a chance to watch a game with his wife.

Rockey worked at Airtex Products for over 20 years and had a true passion for working with his hands. One of his favorite pastimes was knife making—a hobby that quickly became a meaningful and enduring part of his life. Each knife he crafted was a unique labor of love, made with precision, care, and pride. He shared this gift with his family, ensuring that each of his children and grandchildren received one of his handmade knives—personal keepsakes that reflect both his craftsmanship and his love.

Above all, Rockey will be remembered for the ferocious love he had for his family. His loyalty, protection, and guidance were constants in the lives of those who knew him. Whether it was through a steady hand, a warm smile, or a witty joke, his love was always felt—deeply and without condition.

Rockey is survived by his wife Grace Merritt of Fairfield, his daughters Roxane (Sam) Wilborn of Fairfield, Shelly (Anthony) Boster of Virden, IL, Donna (Daniel) Wegner of Maryville, IL, and Crystal (Tyson) Bond of Evansville, IN, his grandchildren Ashley Wilborn, Jordan Boster, Cody Boster, Kendyl Wegner, Carter Wegner, and Kyston Bond, his sister June Galbraith of Cisne, along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepdad Jesse Downen, his brothers Delmar Downen, Phonnie Downen, Travis Downen, Raymond Jr. (Mickey) Merritt, and Jeff Merritt, and his sister Raydean Merritt.

Graveside services for Rockey Merritt will be held at 11am on Tuesday, April 15th, at Maple Hill Cemetery in Fairfield. Family and friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery.
