Donald Warkins, 86 of Jerseyville (Formerly of Fairfield)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Eugene Warkins, who left this world suddenly on April 9, 2025, at the age of 86. 

Born on August 29, 1938, in Sublette, Illinois, Don dedicated his life to education, family, and his community, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by many.

Donald was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was married to his devoted wife, Martha Warkins, on June 23, 1962, at St. Mary’s Church in Belleville, Illinois. Their marriage of 62 years is a testament to love, devotion, and a trusted partnership. Together, they created a nurturing home filled with love, laughter, and support.

Don is survived by his loving children, Julie Biasi and her partner Mark Symkowiak, and Brad Warkins and his wife Kirstian. His legacy continues with his cherished grandchildren: Maria Marks (Nick), Leah Wilhite (Eric), Jennifer Biasi, Valerie Warkins, Joseph Warkins, and Dionysis Warkins. Don took immense joy in recently welcoming his first great-grandson, Julian Wilhite.

He was preceded in death by his beloved in-laws Cecilia and Fred Holtkamp, whose loving family welcomed him as their own, as well as his parents, John Warkins and Grace Warkins. He was also predeceased by his siblings Robert Warkins and Dorothy Boucher.

Donald was not only a dedicated family man but also a passionate educator. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Illinois State University, a Master’s in Education Administration from Southern Illinois University, and a Ph.D. in Education Administration from Nova Southeastern University. His professional journey took him through various esteemed roles. At 27 he took his first Principal position at Westview Schools in Danville, Illinois. He served as the first principal at Illini Junior High School, and then as Principal at Jersey Community High School in Jerseyville, Illinois. He served as Superintendent of Fairfield Community High School before retiring in 1999. He was renowned for his dedication to students and staff alike. Don adopted the children of his schools as his own, and considered his school a home away from home. A respected leader in the education community, Don served on the Illinois Association of School Administrators #39; Board of Directors and the National Association of School Administrators. He served on the Fairfield Memorial Hospital Board of Directors for 15 years, and the Wabash Ohio Valley Special Education District Board of Directors for 17 years, demonstrating his deep commitment to improving the lives of others.

Don was a faithful member and volunteer at Holy Ghost Church in Jerseyville and St. Edwards Church in Fairfield. He approached life with kindness, generosity, and selflessness, always placing family and community above all else. Don viewed his students as extensions of his own family, understanding the importance of supporting those who needed it most. His impact on countless lives will be felt for generations.

Visitation will be held  on Monday, April 14, 2025 from  4:00-7:00 pm at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral Mass will be held to honor Don on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Holy Ghost Church in Jerseyville. He will be laid to rest at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville immediately following the service, followed by a luncheon at West Lake Country Club.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools or the Jerseyville Public Library, honoring his dedication to community, education, and community service.  The Warkins family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the communities of Jerseyville and Fairfield, Illinois, where Don spent his life.

Special thanks are extended to the caring professionals at St. Louis University Hospital, whose support was invaluable during his final day.

Don Warkins will be missed by many, but his spirit and values will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him. Rest in peace, Don. Your legacy of love, education, and community service will not be forgotten.
