As spring approaches, Ameren Illinois is reminding residents of new guidelines under the Illinois Underground Utility Facilities Damage Prevention Act, effective January 1st.
These updates aim to enhance public safety, reduce risks for excavators, prevent service disruptions, and support the growth of essential public services.
It remains a state law to call 811 before any digging activity. The latest requirement mandates that individuals pre-mark their work areas. According to the updated act, all locate requests must include pre-marking through physical markings, electronic white lining (when available), or verbal descriptions that clearly define the excavation area.
Additionally, the amendments include changes to notification times, the positive response process, and reasonable control measures. For more information, visit Illinois1call.
“The new pre-marking requirement adds an extra layer of safety for homeowners and business owners,” said Jake Dukett, supervisor of Natural Gas Public Awareness for Ameren Illinois. “It helps locators accurately identify the worksite.”
Nationally, an underground utility is damaged every six minutes due to failure to call 811 before digging. If a natural gas line is struck, evacuate the area, move upwind, and contact your energy provider, 911, and then 811. Ameren Illinois can be reached at 800-755-5000.
To ensure compliance and safety, follow these essential steps:
Pre-mark the Area: Use white paint, wooden stakes, or flags to indicate where you plan to dig.
Call 811: Contact 811 or visit Illinois1call.com at least three business days before starting your project. Requests can be made anytime, day or night.
Wait for Utility Marking: A professional locator will mark the approximate location of buried utilities, using specific colors for each type (e.g., yellow for natural gas, red for electric). Do not dig until all utilities are marked.
Dig with Caution: Once the site is marked, avoid digging within the tolerance zone—18 inches on either side of the utility mark. Use appropriate tools and follow safe digging practices. If you must dig within this zone, do so by hand or with hydro excavation.
If you accidentally strike an underground utility, stop immediately, clear the area, and call 911 followed by Ameren Illinois at 800-755-5000.
Even small DIY projects require you to contact 811, including:
Planting a garden
Planting a tree
Installing a mailbox
Driving a stake into the ground (like a yard stake for your dog)
Digging an in-ground sandbox
Removing a driveway or concrete slab
“It’s crucial to have utilities marked for every digging project, even if they were marked previously,” emphasized Eric Kozak, vice president of natural gas operations and distribution for Ameren Illinois. “Utility lines may shift over time due to erosion or root growth. Calling 811 is free and easy—ensure your home and neighborhood stay safe by reaching out first.”
