TWO AREA COACHES STEP DOWN
From Randy Olson of AreaSports.net
Two separate boys sports programs at Johnston City High School now have vacancies in their Head Coaching positions following two resignations in the past twenty-four hours. Head Football Coach, Todd Thomas and Head Basketball Coach, Scott Burzynski have both tendered their resignations to the Johnston City administration and school board.
Thomas has been at the helm of the Indians football program for seven years and enjoyed a lot of success, including a deep run in 2A this past season that saw them go 11-2. Johnston City football has been in the playoffs for the past four seasons in a row. Thomas was 53-19 overall in his seven year stint as head coach of the Indians football program. Thomas has indicated that he simply wants to be able to spend more time with his family.
Burzynski resigned as Head Coach of the Boys Basketball program after an 8-year run. While the Indians did have two winning seasons under Burzynski, they struggled this past year, finishing 8-22. He was at the helm of Carterville for seventeen seasons before coming to Johnston City. He had nearly 300 wins with the Lions. He started his coaching career at Elverado. Burzynski is a 1992 gradate of Sesser-Valier, and he still holds the record for being the schools all time leading scorer. He went on to have a successful college basketball playing career for Rich Herrin and the Southern Illinois Salukis.
