ILLINOIS FARMERS MAKE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS IN PLANTING AND CROP CONDITIONS, USDA REPORTS

Illinois farmers made notable strides in planting and crop development last week, according to the USDA update.   The report indicates favorable weather conditions, with 4.1 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending April 20th.

Soil moisture levels remain largely adequate across the state, with topsoil moisture rated 72% as adequate and 20% as surplus. Subsoil moisture is similarly sufficient, with 73% rated as adequate. Very short or short moisture supplies are minimal, supporting ongoing planting activities.

In terms of crop progress, corn planting has reached 7%, slightly below the 5-year average of 11%. Soybean planting has advanced to 10%, surpassing the 5-year average of 7%. Winter wheat headed at 5%, just below the 6% five-year average.

Crop condition assessments show that winter wheat is in good shape, with 49% rated as good and 38% as fair. Small percentages are rated very poor or poor, indicating overall positive conditions for the season.
