EDWARDS COUNTY PROPERTY TAX MULTIPLIER REMAINS UNCHANGED, PROTECTING TAX FAIRNESS IN ILLINOIS

Residents of Edwards County can rest assured that their property assessments will remain stable for another year, as the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) has announced that the county’s property tax equalization multiplier will stay at 1.0000.

This “multiplier” is a key component in calculating property taxes, ensuring that assessment levels across Illinois counties are consistent and in compliance with state law. Its primary purpose is to promote uniformity among counties—especially important for local taxing districts such as schools, fire protection, and junior colleges that serve multiple counties. By maintaining equalized assessments, the multiplier helps prevent disparities in tax burdens among taxpayers with similar properties.

Illinois law mandates that properties be assessed at one-third of their market value. IDOR Director David Harris noted that the equalization factor is calculated annually by comparing recent property sales prices with assessed values from the past three years. Currently, Edwards County’s assessments stand at 33.32% of market value, based on sales data from 2021 through 2023.

While the overall property assessment process involves the multiplier, individual property taxes are determined by each property’s specific assessed value. The tentative equalization factor is subject to change and may be revised if the County Board of Review makes significant assessment adjustments or if new data justifies a modification. A public hearing to discuss and potentially finalize the multiplier will be held within 20 to 30 days after its announcement is published in a local newspaper.
