U.S. Senator Dick Durbin announced on Wednesday that he will not seek re-election in 2026. The 80-year-old lawmaker, who is currently serving his fifth term in the Senate, has had a long career in public service, including time in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1982 to 1996. He currently holds the position of minority whip in the Senate.
In his statement, Durbin expressed that his decision was not made lightly. “The decision of whether to run for re-election has not been easy. I truly love the job of being a United States Senator, but in my heart, I know it’s time to pass the torch. So, I am announcing that I will not be seeking re-election at the end of my term,” he said.
Throughout his tenure, Durbin has held significant roles, including serving as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee during the 117th and 118th Congresses. He has also been a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee
