By Mark Wells Apr 25, 2025 | 5:58 AM

An autopsy performed on a two-year-old girl from Brownsville has not yet revealed a cause of death. The Illinois State Police Child Death Task Force has opened an investigation into the passing of Aspen Nelson, who was found deceased last Friday morning at her mother’s residence.

White County Coroner Chris Marsh confirmed that the autopsy, conducted Monday morning in Springfield, was inconclusive. He is currently awaiting the results of toxicology and culture tests before an official cause of death can be determined.

Aspen Nelson was staying at the home of her mother, Nikki Hast, where Hast’s boyfriend, Loren Phillips, was also present. According to authorities, Aspen had been dropped off at the residence by her father, Justin Nelson, around 5pmThursday. She was found unresponsive the next morning.

Funeral services for Aspen Nelson will be announced later during the obituaries.

A GoFundMe account has been created to assist the family with funeral and final expenses.
