A serious crash late Wednesday evening on Shawneetown-New Haven Road resulted in multiple injuries and required several medical airlifts to area hospitals. The roadway is now reopened.

According to Illinois State Police, the accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. at the intersection with Ridgway-New Haven Road. The crash involved an eastbound Chevrolet Silverado and a Chevrolet Malibu. Authorities believe the Silverado driver failed to obey a stop sign, leading to the collision.

Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene, and both the driver and passenger of the Silverado, along with the driver of the Malibu, were seriously injured and airlifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. The crash prompted the closure of Shawneetown-New Haven Road for approximately five hours while first responders worked to secure the scene and conduct investigations.

The roadway was reopened around 2:30 a.m., but Illinois State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Further details have not yet been released.
