Unemployment Information

Wayne County’s unemployment rate for March  came in at 3.7 percent, according to numbers from the Illinois Department of Employment Security.  They report most of southern Illinois saw lower unemployment numbers in March.

Clay County’s rate was at 4.6 percent, while Jefferson County reported 4.3 percent.  Marion County had a March unemployment rate of 4.4 percent, down six tenths of a percent from March of last year.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security said total nonfarm employment dropped by 600 jobs in the past year.  The biggest growth areas were in the private education-health services and Government.  The biggest declines occurred in the manufacturing and trade-transportation-utilities sector, leisure-hospitality, construction and mining.

The statewide unemployment rate for March was reported to be an even five percent, unchanged from a year ago.
