Aydreian Hooper, a 36-year-old woman from Fairfield, is facing charges related to the tragic death of her son last July, raising concerns about her fitness to stand trial.
During a hearing in Wayne County Circuit Court on Thursday morning, a judge ordered a fitness evaluation for Hooper, who is accused of leaving her two young children unattended in a hot car, which led to the death of her 17-month-old son, Aaruan, and serious injuries to her two-year-old son, Gage Hooper Gonzales.
Public Defender Heidi Hoffee requested the fitness hearing, expressing legitimate doubts regarding Hooper’s ability to stand trial. As a result, the judge canceled the jury trial that was scheduled for October 7th.
Hooper faces several charges, including involuntary manslaughter, two counts of child endangerment, and reckless conduct. The tragic incident occurred on July 25th when she allegedly left the children in a hot vehicle outside her home on Illinois Avenue in Fairfield. Currently, Hooper is being held in the Wayne County jail after her request for pretrial release was denied.
Following the cancellation of the jury trial, the judge scheduled a status hearing for October 24th.
