During tonight’s meeting of the Enfield Village Board, members will discuss a resolution to accept ownership of Booth School, which closed in 2023 due to declining enrollment. Last month, the Norris City Omaha Enfield (NCOE) District board approved a resolution to transfer the school and its associated property, which includes the school building, 20 acres of wooded land, a park, and ball fields, to the village of Enfield. If the Enfield board approves the resolution, the NCOE board will proceed with the legal steps to officially transfer the deed. It remains uncertain whether the Booth Trust, which had a balance of $44,990 as of August, will be included in this transfer.
In a separate matter, Enfield Police Chief Mark Wheeler has submitted his resignation, leaving the village without a police officer. The village board is expected to formally accept his resignation at tonight’s meeting. Wheeler has served as chief since July of last year and previously held the position of Chief Deputy under former White County Sheriff Jerry O’Neal. His departure raises concerns about an agreement between the Village of Mill Shoals and Enfield for police protection.
